Steam Machine: A Compact Performance Console for 4K Gaming
Reviving the name from Valve’s earlier console experiment, the new Steam Machine reimagines the concept as a compact, high-performance gaming PC optimized for both TV and desktop environments. The cube-shaped chassis measures 160 mm per side, weighs 2.6 kg, and delivers six times the performance of the Steam Deck, offering 4K/60 FPS gaming with support for AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution.
Powered by a semi-custom 6-core/12-thread AMD Zen 4 CPU and a 28-CU RDNA 3 GPU, the Steam Machine strikes a balance between performance and efficiency. Its cooling system is engineered for quiet operation, and connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, gigabit Ethernet, DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0, and multiple USB ports. The system comes with 16 GB DDR5 RAM, 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM, and up to 2 TB NVMe SSD storage, running a KDE Plasma–based SteamOS 3.
Beyond gaming, the device can act as a streaming host for other Steam devices on the same network, such as the Steam Deck and Steam Frame. With its compact footprint and built-in wireless controller adapter, the Steam Machine serves as both a living-room console and an enthusiast-grade mini PC.
Steam Frame: Standalone Wireless VR Headset
At the center of Valve’s new hardware lineup is the Steam Frame, a VR headset built with streaming as its core focus, offering access to VR and traditional games in the Steam library. It is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and runs a custom version of SteamOS, enabling both standalone operation and wireless PC connectivity for full library access.
The headset features 2160 × 2160 LCD panels per eye with up to 144 Hz refresh rate. Combined with integrated eye-tracking that enables foveated rendering, it delivers enhanced clarity in the user’s focal area. Ergonomically, the Steam Frame emphasizes comfort with balanced weight distribution and a modular head strap housing an additional 21.6 Wh battery, bringing the total weight to 440 g, with the headset module alone weighing just 185 g.
Advanced tracking and optics include four monochrome tracking cameras, two integrated eye-tracking sensors, and custom folded optics providing edge-to-edge clarity. The included Steam Frame controllers support six-degree-of-freedom tracking, magnetic joysticks, and capacitive finger sensing, enabling seamless switching between VR and standard gamepad layouts.
Steam Controller: Evolved Precision and Customization
The new Steam Controller features a completely redesigned form factor, integrating magnetic joysticks and advanced haptic technology. Its TMR magnetic sticks offer near-zero drift and capacitive touch sensing, while dual pressure-sensitive trackpads replicate mouse-level precision. Newly added grip sensors and gyro-assisted aiming improve accuracy, and four customizable rear grip buttons expand personalization potential.
Connection performance is enhanced through the Steam Controller Puck, a low-latency 2.4 GHz transmitter that also doubles as a magnetic charging dock, delivering approximately 8 ms latency and over 35 hours of battery life. The controller also supports Bluetooth and USB-C connections and is compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame.
